ANEMIA

Anemia is a condition characterized by low levels of hemoglobin in the blood, which reduces the body's ability to adequately transport oxygen to the tissues.

It is not a disease in itself, but rather a clinical manifestation with multiple causes, ranging from nutritional deficiencies to inflammatory, chronic, or hematological diseases. Therefore, it requires a structured medical evaluation to identify the exact cause rather than treating it empirically.

An accurate diagnosis allows for differentiation between iron-deficiency anemia, anemia due to chronic disease, megaloblastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, or other less common causes.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

The severity of symptoms depends on the degree of anemia and the rate at which it develops. It may present with:

  • Persistent fatigue

  • Generalized weakness

  • Paleness

  • Dizziness or fainting spells

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Palpitations

  • Shortness of breath on exertion

In more severe cases, there may be cardiovascular involvement or significant limitation of functional capacity.

MAIN CAUSES

Among the most common causes are iron deficiency, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency, chronic inflammatory diseases, gastrointestinal or gynecological blood loss, as well as hematological diseases or kidney disorders.

COMPLICATIONS IF LEFT UNTREATED

When not properly treated, anemia can lead to a significant decline in physical performance, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular decompensation, and worsening of coexisting chronic conditions.

HOW IT IS DIAGNOSED

The medical evaluation includes a complete blood count and, depending on the case, tests such as serum iron and ferritin levels, vitamin B12 and folic acid levels, renal function assessment, and other complementary tests based on clinical suspicion.

A comprehensive analysis allows for the determination of the type of anemia and its underlying cause to provide appropriate management.

TREATMENT AND FOLLOW-UP

Treatment depends directly on the identified cause. It may include iron supplementation, vitamin B12 or folic acid replacement, treatment of the underlying condition, and periodic follow-up with monitoring tests.

MY APPROACH TO ANEMIA MANAGEMENT

In my practice, I aim to accurately identify the cause of the anemia before starting any treatment. I review your test results, analyze your medical history, and establish a personalized plan.

My goal is not only to normalize your hemoglobin levels but also to treat the underlying cause, prevent recurrences, and support you clearly and closely throughout the process.

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?

For a more comprehensive evaluation, it is recommended that you bring:

  • Recent blood test results

  • Previous related studies

  • Updated list of medications

  • Relevant medical history
