HEADACHE (CEPHALALGIA)

WHAT IS A HEADACHE?

Headaches are one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care. They are not a single disease, but rather a symptom with multiple causes.

It can be a primary headache, such as a migraine or tension headache, or a secondary headache related to hypertension, infections, metabolic disorders, or neurological problems. Identifying its cause is key to providing appropriate and safe treatment.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

The pain may manifest as:

  • Pressing or throbbing pain

  • Localized on one side or throughout the head

  • Sensitivity to light or sound

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • A sensation of pressure or heaviness

When episodes are recurrent or limit daily activities, it is important to seek a specialized medical evaluation.

WARNING SIGNS

It is recommended to seek immediate medical evaluation if the pain:

  • Is sudden and severe (“the worst headache of your life”)

  • Is accompanied by a high fever or stiff neck

  • Occurs after a blow to the head

  • Is accompanied by weakness, difficulty speaking, or seizures

  • Gradually changes in intensity or frequency

These situations require ruling out significant neurological or systemic causes.

HOW IT IS DIAGNOSED

The diagnosis is based on a detailed medical history, analysis of the pain’s characteristics, and a complete physical examination. When indicated, laboratory tests or imaging studies are ordered to rule out secondary causes.

TREATMENT AND FOLLOW-UP

Treatment depends on the cause and includes medication for pain control, preventive treatment in recurrent cases, and addressing triggers such as sleep disturbances, stress, or associated medical conditions.

Regular medical follow-up allows for treatment adjustments and helps reduce the frequency and intensity of episodes.

MY APPROACH TO HEADACHE MANAGEMENT

In my practice, I evaluate your headache within the broader context of your overall health. I review your medical history, potential triggers, and associated conditions to accurately identify the cause. My goal is to help you manage episodes, prevent recurrences, and provide you with close, ongoing support.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BRING TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?

For a more accurate assessment, we recommend bringing any previous test results (if available), an updated list of medications, a record of the frequency and severity of your symptoms, and any relevant medical history.
