RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system causes persistent inflammation of the joints. It is not caused by mechanical wear and tear, but rather by a systemic inflammatory process that can affect not only the hands and feet, but also the lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

Without timely treatment, it can lead to irreversible joint damage and progressive loss of function; therefore, early evaluation and ongoing medical follow-up are essential.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

It may present with:

  • Persistent joint pain

  • Swelling and enlargement of the joints

  • Prolonged morning stiffness (lasting more than 30 minutes)

  • Constant fatigue

  • Progressive loss of mobility

ASSOCIATED FACTORS AND RISKS

People with a genetic predisposition, a family history of autoimmune diseases, or exposure to factors such as smoking are more likely to develop the condition.

Chronic, sustained inflammation also increases cardiovascular risk, so treatment must be comprehensive and not limited solely to the joints.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

The diagnosis is based on a detailed medical history, physical examination, and tests such as rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP antibodies, and inflammatory markers. In some cases, imaging studies are also performed.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and includes disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, anti-inflammatory medications, and, when indicated, advanced therapies. The goal is to control inflammation, preserve joint function, and prevent structural progression.
