PNEUMONIA

Pneumonia is an acute infection of the lungs that inflames the alveoli and disrupts oxygen exchange, compromising the body's oxygenation.

It can be caused by bacteria or viruses, and its severity increases in older adults or those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity.

Therefore, a timely medical evaluation is essential to prevent complications.

COMMON SYMPTOMS

It may present with:

  • High fever

  • Cough with phlegm

  • Chest pain when breathing

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Severe fatigue

  • Chills

In older adults, symptoms may be more subtle, presenting as confusion, weakness, or functional decline.

RISK FACTORS AND CLINICAL RISK

There is a higher risk in older adults, smokers, and those with pre-existing respiratory diseases or chronic metabolic conditions. It may also occur following recent hospitalizations or respiratory infections.

POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

Without timely treatment, pneumonia can progress to respiratory failure, pleural effusion, sepsis, or decompensation of preexisting chronic conditions.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Diagnosis is made through a detailed medical history, physical examination of the lungs, and tests such as chest X-rays and laboratory tests. In selected cases, a CT scan or other tests may be required to assess the extent and severity of the condition.

Treatment depends on the cause and includes antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia, symptomatic management, and, if indicated, oxygen therapy. In patients with associated metabolic conditions, it is essential to simultaneously manage these conditions.

MY APPROACH TO MANAGING PNEUMONIA

In my practice, I evaluate not only the lung infection but also the full context of your health. I review your medical history, risk factors, and possible associated conditions to determine the severity of the illness. My goal is to treat the infection promptly, reduce risks, and closely support you throughout your recovery.

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT?

For a more comprehensive evaluation, it is recommended that you bring recent imaging studies, previous lab results, an updated list of medications (with dosages), and relevant medical history.
