DIABETES
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder in which blood glucose levels rise due to a problem with insulin production, insulin function, or both.
It can present as type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or diabetes secondary to other medical conditions. Beyond being a problem of “high blood sugar,” it is a systemic disease that, when not properly managed, can affect the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nervous system.
Therefore, timely diagnosis and ongoing medical follow-up are essential for maintaining metabolic stability and preventing long-term complications.
COMMON SYMPTOMS
Some people may experience:
-
Increased thirst and frequent urination
-
Persistent fatigue
-
Unintentional weight loss
-
Blurred vision
-
Recurrent infections
-
Slow healing
Especially in type 2 diabetes, the disease can progress silently for years, making early detection crucial.
RISK FACTORS
Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing diabetes:
-
Family history
-
Overweight or obesity
-
Sedentary lifestyle
-
High blood pressure
-
Abnormal cholesterol and triglyceride levels
-
Metabolic syndrome
COMPLICATIONS IF UNMANAGED
When diabetes is not properly managed, it can lead to cardiovascular disease (heart attack or stroke), chronic kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy), vision problems (retinopathy), peripheral neuropathy, and increased susceptibility to infections.
HOW IT IS DIAGNOSED
Diagnosis is made through fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), or an oral glucose tolerance test. Additionally, it is important to assess blood pressure, lipid profile, and kidney function to obtain a complete picture of metabolic status.
TREATMENT AND FOLLOW-UP
Treatment is tailored to each individual and includes lifestyle changes, a nutrition plan tailored to metabolic goals, oral or injectable medication as appropriate, and regular monitoring of blood glucose and HbA1c levels.
